Physiological Effects of Canine Massage
ON THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM:

* Improves blood circulation by mechanically assisting blood flow back to the
     heart.
* Decreases heart rate through the relaxation response as the stroke volume (the         amount of blood pumped out of the heart with each beat) is increased.
* Decreases blood pressure by the dilation of blood vessels.

ON THE MUSCLES:

* Reduces soreness, fatigue, tightness and spasms. Increased blood circulation                brings more nutrients and oxygen to the muscles and promotes rapid disposal of
     waste products.
* Reduces trigger point formation by the pressure applied to the tissues during a
     massage.
* Increases Range of Motion through a reduction of muscle tension.

ON THE BONES:

* Increases the retention of minerals and nutrients.
* Promotes fracture healing through increased circulation which in turn promotes
the quicker formation of a callus on the bone.
ON THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM:

* Promotes lymph circulation which removes waste from the system more                    effectively and helps to reduce swelling.
* Increases the number and efficiency of "natural killer cells" thereby strengthening       and supporting the immune system.

ON THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:

* Stimulates digestion and promotes evacuation of the colon.

ON THE NERVOUS SYSTEM:

* Reduces stress and anxiety and promotes relaxation by activating the                        parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest response).

ON THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:

* Improves pulmonary functions by loosening tight respiratory muscles and fascia.        This increases the volume of air inhaled and exhaled.
* Reduces respiration rate as a result of the activation of the relaxation response.
ON THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM:

* Increases dopamine and serotonin levels which reduce depression and decrease          stress levels

ON THE URINARY SYSTEM:

* Promotes the excretion of metabolic wastes.

ON THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM (hair, skin, nails)

* Improves skin condition as superficial blood vessels dilate allowing increased             circulation which brings more nutrients to the skin.
* Stimulates oil and sweat glands.
